Hark! Yarnologists! The time has come for our next contest!!

What is the theme you ask........I'll tell you!

Extinct Creatures

:iconquetzaltopplz:
:iconquetzalmiddleplz:
:iconquetzalbottomplz:

Those mysterious marvels of the ancient world! You are challenged to make creatures who have ceased to exist due to climate change, human contact, or a bizarre turn of events.

Be sure to include information in your description about how/when the creature went extinct. It would also be great if you could include what you based your creature's appearance on. Considering these creatures are no longer around, many interpretations of the same animal could be possible! Just make sure you explain your reasoning behind the looks you give your creature.

Rules:
:bulletred: Your entry must be submitted into the Contest folder in the NationalYarnographic group gallery
:bulletred: Your project must be made after April 18th and before May 23rd 2013.
:bulletred: You must be a member of NationalYarnographic.
:bulletred: The submission must be amigurumi, which is to say three dimensional and constructed with crochet or knitting. Small amounts of multi-media will be allowed, but if more than 25% of the piece is non-amigurumi then the submission may be disqualified.  (If in doubt ask! The emphasis here is on structure not coloration)
:bulletred: The subject must be from nature. No fictional creatures or man-made structures.
:bulletred: Description must include the name of the subject and little bit about the extinct creature. Extra facts and links to pictures or additional information are appreciated but not required.
:bulletred: If you based your work on a pattern made by another artist, please say and include a link. Your entry will not be disqualified, but we need to know in order to judge fairly.

Judging Criteria:
:bulletblack: Basic construction: are the stitches even and consistent? Are pieces sewn together neatly? Are there any major holes or flaws?
:bulletblack:  Accuracy and detail: Is it recognizable? Are key features accounted for? Are the colors correct?
:bulletblack:  Yarnification: Did the artist translate the subject well into amigurumi? Did the techniques used enhance the subjects natural features? Was the design original or based on someone else's pattern or design?
:bulletblack: Presentation: Is the photograph clear? Are facts about the animal included in the description?
:bulletblack: Bonus: Additional scene setting, writing description in field guide style- any little bit of extra effort that makes the piece stand out.

More information about the rules:
That finicky 25% non-amigurumi rule.Hellooo!
So there's been some worry about this rule:  "The submission must be amigurumi, which is to say three dimensional and constructed with crochet or knitting. Small amounts of multi-media will be allowed, but if more than 25% of the piece is non-amigurumi then the submission may be disqualified."
I think it's super awesome that you guys want to be sure to follow the rules!  I also feel guilty for making you worry about it.  So let me disambiguate.  Here's my thinking on the issue:
Amigurumi is about making shapes with knots.  You could make these knots with needles, you could make these knots with hooks, you could probably make them with your fingers, or any number of improvised tools! You could make these knots with yarn, or wire, or string, or even spaghetti if you were really determined!
If you need to incorporate structural elements inside your complicated knot-work to make it stand up, or sit down, or do the hula then that's fine!  Whether it's stuffing, or wire, or p

Judging will be carried out by :iconsaddayscrochet: and :iconthe-carolyn-michelle:. We will try to be thoughtful and fair! We may enter the contest, but will not be eligible to win anything. All other members will be eligible, including those offering prizes!

Speaking of prizes...
The prizes are still being collected!  If you would like to suggest a prize please contact us!
